These are a collection of comics I like a lot and check for new episodes if they’re currently running. Note: I have a lot of description text on this page, so if you’re not using a screen reader, you’ll have to do quite a bit of scrolling. I might update this page in the future as I get into more stories.

El Goonish Shive
A strange comic about a group of teenagers and the bizarre, often supernatural, situations that they face. Includes a continuing storyline with non-linear joke comics on the side. WARNING: Often ignores the laws of Physics.
Many if not most of the strips have commentary under them, especially toward the beginning and the recent ones which I enjoyed reading.
The art style starts out a little rough, but it’s vastly improved over the 22 years and counting that it’s been running.
The first comic looks like this:

Character Descriptions
- Elliot is standing on the left and is a teen boy with pale skin, a black t-shirt, and short light gray hair.
- Tedd is standing on the right and is an androgynous teen with large round glasses through which you can’t see his eyes, a light gray dress shirt, and medium-long dark gray hair.
Transcript
Panel 1
Elliot: Hello, I’m Elliot. This thing to my left is named Tedd.
Tedd: Sup.
Panel 2
Elliot, turning slightly to his left and leaning his head forward: As you are probably aware, this is our first comic, and as you know, first comics always suck.
Panel 3
Tedd: Always.
Elliot, closing his eyes and shrugging his shoulders: And of course, our first comic will be no exception.
Panel 4
Tedd: Yup.
Elliot, pointing his thumb toward Tedd: Oh, and in case you can’t tell, Tedd’s a guy.
Tedd, angrily swinging his head toward Elliott: HEY!!!
The latest comic looks like this:

Character Descriptions
- Tedd is an androgynous teen with pale skin and medium-length medium-dark hair which curves around their face. They are wearing a light jacket over a medium-dark shirt, small clear glasses, and a medium-dark circular necklace.
- Sarah is a teen girl with pale skin and shoulder-length flowing pale blonde hair. She is wearing a light dress over a medium-light short sleeve shirt and a medium-light headband. Sarah is the same height as Tedd.
- Grace is a teen girl with tanned skin and almost shoulder-length flowy medium-dark hair. She is wearing a black jacket over a medium-dark shirt and a light circular necklace. She is a couple inches taller than Tedd, Sarah, and Hope.
- Hope is a younger teen girl with pale skin and long black hair tied into two ponytails. She is wearing a light sporty t-shirt with medium-dark sleeves, and a medium-light headband.
- Jill is a teen girl with pale skin and medium-light hair pulled into a ponytail on the bottom and partially shaved on the top to create a rockstar look. She is wearing a light tank top which has been cut at the bottom to give it a torn look, a black choker with white studs, medium-dark fingerless gloves, black bracelets with white studs, a black belt with white studs, and a medium-light skirt.
- Susan is a teen girl with pale skin and is the tallest character by a few inches. She has very long loose black hair which covers much of her face, and is wearing a medium dark sleeveless dress.
Transcript
Panel 1
Four characters are in a movie rental store, visible from the waist up. Tedd and Sarah face each other with surprised expressions on their faces. Grace is facing just right of the camera and is giving a thumbs up with her right hand with a sympathetic expression on her face. Hope is walking to the right and looking slightly downward.
Panel 2
Hope, Jill, and Sarah are in a corner of the store, visible from the waist up. Hope is bent down to pick something up. She is turned away from the camera and partially blocked by a short shelf so that only the back of her shoulders and head are visible. Jill is standing with her arms crossed and half-lidded eyes, blushing slightly as she talks to Susan. She says: “Like, okay, it’s not surprising that I lost, but it’s like he was trying to make an annoying, slow deck. Your deck takes it slow, too, but you do way more than saying, ‘Nope, you can’t play that’ half the time”. Susan is turned away from the camera to face Jill so that only the left side of her body is visible. Her arms are hanging loose by her sides.
Panel 3
Hope is now wearing a medium-light backpack and facing just left of the camera with her head tilted downward and a somewhat sad but thoughtful expression on her face. She is gripping the backpack straps with both of her hands. Off-camera, Susan says, “Yeah, mine just sort of…takes abuse, then blows up the world.”
Panel 4
Hope is standing right next to Jill, with Susan across from them. She has let go of her backpack straps and has a worried expression on her face as she turns toward Jill and Susan says, “Hey, um…Jill?” Jill is standing with her arms crossed and is still blushing a little, but her eyes are wide open, and she is lifting one eyebrow. Susan has turned a little more toward the camera so that the left side her face is visible. Her eyes are also open, and her eyebrows are raised slightly.
My Opinions
My favorite character is Susan, both in looks and in character development. She starts out as a minor character, but then she becomes more involved in the main plot and is now part of the regular cast of characters. I also like Nanase’s character a lot with her appearance and abilities. Everyone’s characterization is rough at first, and I don’t think I liked either of them very much, but they’ve definitely grown over the years and therefore also grown on me. Tedd probably has the most character development of all, and it works out so well.
The EGS storyline is continuous, and it is recommended that the comics be read in order.

Order of the Stick
Order of the Stick is a D&D adventure comic that’s been running since 2003. All the characters have gotten strong development over the years, but I think my favorite character is Hayley (the rouge/ranger with the bow), or Vaarsuvius (the wizard). Vaarsuvius in particular has a really cool story moment that comes back later in an epic way.
First Comic
The first comic is a little rough, but in a more endearing way. It looks like this:

Character Descriptions
- Vaarsuvius is an elf wizard with pale skin, a red long-sleeved robe and cape with a tiny yellow clasp, pointy ears, shoulder-length straight purple hair, and a thin gold band around the top of her head.
- Elan is a human bard with pale skin, short yellow hair, a green shirt, a blue cape with a green stripe at the bottom, and an orange band which spans across his torso from his right shoulder to his left hip.
- Haley is a human rogue with pale skin, long reddish brown hair tied back in a ponytail, a brown shirt and pants exposing her midriff, and brown boots.
- Belkar is a halflng rogue with pale skin, a light green shirt, dark green pants, a dark green cape with a small yellow clasp, a thin tuft of ginger hair on his otherwise bald head, and hairy bare feet. He is very short.
- The goblins have medium-dark green skin, black shirts, pointy ears, and two white fangs pointing upward from their mouths.
- Roy is a human fighter with brown skin, a blue shirt, and gray shoulder pads.
- Durkon is a dwarven cleric with light brown skin, gray armor, a yellow necklace, a thin brown belt, and gray shoulder pads. He has no hair on top of his head but does have a medium-dark brown bushy beard.
- The goblins have bright green skin, black shirts, pointy ears, and yellow eyes. They are wielding axes.
Transcript
Panel 1
The six adventurers are fighting a group of seven goblins. Vaarsuvius is in the lower left corner, frowning and casting a spell with a pink aura on a goblin in the lower right corner. Elan is standing toward the back on the left, strumming a brown lute while singing with no visible lyrics. Haley is in front of Elan, sticking her tongue out in concentration while aiming her longbow toward a scared goblin on the far right; there is already an arrow about to hit the goblin. Belkar is toward the left, holding up a dagger and frowning. Directly in front of Belkar, there are two dead goblins laying on the ground. Roy is facing away from the camera and is cutting a goblin in half at the waist with his sword. Durkon, slightly to the right of the middle, is standing firm with a warhammer in one hand and a generic round shield in the other. A goblin is charging at Durkon while yelling “Grrrr!”. Behind it, barely visible, there is a dead goblin on the ground with two of Haley’s arrows sticking out of its head.
Panel 2
Durkon and the goblin who was charging him are both surprised as the goblin bounces right off his shield with a “boing!” sound effect. As the goblin is thrown back, he drops his battleaxe.
Panel 3
Haley says, “What the hell? That goblin was gonna knock you on your ass.” Elan is standing silently, looking to the right over Durkon’s head. Durkon is facing left toward them, still surprised, and says, “I dinnae know. I jus’ felt really…stable”. In front of them, close to the camera, there is the head of a dead goblin laying on the ground.
Panel 4
There is a “POP!” sound effect as a gray shirt suddenly appears on Elan’s torso. Haley looks concerned, while Durkon looks shocked.
Panel 5
Vaarsuvius, Belkar, and Roy have gathered around to the left of Elan. Vaarsuvius is still frowning, while Belkar looks a little disappointed. Roy is bending over to examine Elan’s shirt as he says “Uhhh…I think it’s a chain shirt”. Elan faces directly toward the camera, raising his right arm and grinning as he says “Sweet!”.
Panel 6
Vaarsuvius, Belkar, and Roy are facing the camera. Vaarsuvius raises both her arms as she continues to frown, saying, “I understand. I believe we are being converted to the new 3.5 edition”. In the background, Roy says relatively quietly, “Well, I do feel more intimidating…” Belkar, standing close to the camera, raises both his arms and grins as he shouts, “YES!” Belkar’s dagger looks relatively large, almost the size of his head.
Panel 7
Belkar’s full body is visible. He smiles and declares, “I’ve been doing this ranger crap for 3 years now, it’s about time for an upgrade.” Then, he whispers, “C’mon, c’mon, Daddy needs some new skill points!” In the lower right corner next to him, close to the camera, there is the head of a dead goblin laying on the ground.
Panel 8
Belkar is smiling as his dagger gives off a “waa!” sound effect.
Panel 9
Belkar is still smiling as his dagger is noticeably smaller and giving off a quieter “waa!” sound effect.
Panel 10
Belkar is no longer smiling as his dagger is barely longer than his hand and giving off a much quieter “wawawawa!” sound effect.
Panel 11
Roy looks at the camera and says, “Oooo…Weapon shrinkage”. Haley, facing to the right, says, “Tee hee, it’s so tiny!” Belkar, frowning fiercely, yells, “DAMN IT!”. A “ping!” sound effect comes from Elan, who smiles and quietly says, “Ooh! Skill points!”. Belkar yells even louder, “DAMN IT!”

Character Descriptions
- The dinosaur is a huge t-rex with light reddish-brown skin, darker reddish-brown markings on the side of its head, small reddish purple stripes on its back small yellow eyes, and several sharp teeth poking out from its upper jaw.
- Belkar is a halflng rogue with pale skin, a light green shirt, dark green pants, a dark green cape with a small yellow clasp, a thin tuft of ginger hair on his otherwise bald head, and hairy bare feet. He is very short.
- Scruffy is a housecat with white fur, yellow eyes, and no visible mouth. It comes up to Belkar’s waist.
Transcript
Panel 1
The dinosaur is on the left, bending low to listen to Belkar. Belkar walks toward it, looking up as he says, “Hey, buddy. How’s it going? You don’t actually know what’s going to happen, right? So I’m not sure what Roy thinks this is going to accomplish”. Scruffy the cat is walking toward the dinosaur, close to Belkar.
Panel 2
Belkar places his hand on the dinosaur’s snout and frowns as he says, “This sucks. Weird to think about how you’ve only been around here for a few weeks, though. With how much it sucks.”
Panel 3
Belkar narrates a flashback to him sleeping in a bed with the dinosaur as a small lizard on his head and the cat curled up at his side. He says, “It’s hard to remember a time when you and Scruffy weren’t actively impeding the quality of my long rests.”
Panel 4
The comic returns to the present. Only the corner of the dinosaur’s snout is visible for this and the next few panels. Belkar has moved his hand away from the dinosaur’s snout, holding it out in midair. He says, “I guess it’s probably been a bigger change for you, right? Back home, you were the strongest and meanest one around”.
Panel 5
Belkar looks down at his hands to think as he says, “And then you leave and it’s just POOF! Everyone’s bigger than you all of a sudden. Everyone’s a giant, and you maybe go a little crazy with the biting as a result, right?”
Panel 6
Belkar looks downward, not saying anything as he pets Scruffy on the back.
Panel 7
Belkar looks back up at the dinosaur, no longer frowning. He says, “I don’t know where I was going with that”.
Panel 8
Most of the dinosaur’s head is now visible. Belkar points a finger upward, smiling slightly as he says, “Anyway, this’ll work out fine. When this is over, I’ll kick the elf until they break out the library card and learn how to turn you back into a little lizard that can sleep on my head again”.
Panel 9
The dinosaur grabs Belkar’s sleeve with its mouth, lifting him off the floor. Belkar is shocked, saying “What–?”
Panel 10
The dinosaur flips its head backward, letting go of Belkar so that he’s thrown backwards through the air in a short arc.
Panel 11
Belkar crashes with a grimace into the dinosaur, hitting his chin on its back with a “Splapt!” sound effect.
Panel 12
The camera zooms out to show the dinosaur laying on the ground with its eyes closed and one arm draped over its stomach. Belkar lays on its neck as he says, “Or this. This works, too”. On the ground, Scruffy is curled up next to the dinosaur with its eyes closed. The dinosaur is softly snoring: “kwooooooo…kwooooooo…kwooooooo…”
My Opinions
D&D is a game I’ve gotten into more within the past five years, although I dabbled in it in middle and high school. The main group I play with now is awesome, and I’m glad they’re my friends. I love the game, not just because of the people I play with, although it helps a lot.
The plot of Order of the Stick has been very interesting, and each of the characters have gotten great character development. I also like how Order of the Stick often breaks the fourth wall with some of its jokes.

Namesake
Namesake is the tale of two sisters, Emma and Elaine, who awaken their powers as Skeleton Key and Writer respectively – powers that allow them to travel to magical fairy tale lands and take charge of the ending of their story.
The premise of this story is very compelling, and the worldbuilding is fantastic, in both senses of the word. The main story is divided into long chapters, and interspersed with announcements of comic con events or short holiday stories when those come up during the year. The comic’s been running at least since 2010, although based on the comment section it might have been started before that and only moved to its current site then.
Each comic has a brief commentary in the hover text, which you can read either by hovering over it with your cursor or by clicking on the Hover Text button. Another thing I appreciate about the website setup is that you can click on a comic to go to the next one, which is intuitive and convenient.
First Comic
The first comic after the prologue looks like this:

Character Descriptions
- The man in the illustration is a knight wearing gray armor and a brown cloak. He has pale skin, medium-long loose dark hair, and dark eyes. With both hands, he holds a sword pointing downwards which reaches all the way to the ground. The knight is either short or kneeling.
- The girl directly in front of the knight and to the left is wearing a blue dress with long sleeves and ruffled shoulders. She has pale skin, long loose dark hair, and dark eyes. She is holding a red apple in her right hand and reaching for the other girl’s waist with her left hand.
- The girl directly in front of the knight and to the right is wearing a red dress with long sleeves and ruffled shoulders. She has pale screen, long loose reddish brown hair, and dark eyes. She is holding a key in her left hand and reaching for the other girl’s waist with her right hand.
- Behind the knight, there is a pale green forest spirit. It looks like a woman with very, very long flowing hair with a few flowers woven in. Her eyes are closed, and she’s smiling with one finger gently raised in the air.
- Behind the group on the right, behind a few trees, there is a large cat-like creature with flowing red-orange fur, yellow eyes, a big open mouth with sharp off-white teeth, and a large clawed paw.
- Elaine is a young teenaged girl with pale skin, long somewhat light loose hair, and a rounded nose. She is wearing a dark top and several bracelets around her left wrist.
Transcript
Panel 1
The painting shows the five illustrated characters at the edge of a forest. The trees are densely packed, and the ground is an inverted hill with swirling pale green grass. The knight and two girls are standing together, with the forest spirit floating behind them. The knight is facing the camera directly, while the girls are facing the camera but turned slightly toward each other. The forest spirit has its right index finger raised as if to tap the knight on the shoulder. The cat creature is watching the group and is poised as if to pounce.
On the left, there is a text block: “Fairy tale protagonists usually fall into two categories: those who seek adventure and those who have adventure thrust upon them. Supporting roles usually fulfill a particular character archetype and assist the protagonist in reaching their goal.”
On the bottom there is another test block: “Please complete the following exercise: study three common fairy tales and list the category the protagonists fall into. Assign the supporting characters the appropriate role based on the following list and explain why they adhere to it …”
Panel 2
In the library, Elaine slams the book shut in midair. She is looking at it with a slightly disdainful expression.
Panel 3
At a table in front of a wall of a books, Elaine hunches over a short stack of books, resting her chin on her right hand and scowling off to the left side at something unseen. She is holding a black phone in her left hand. There are a few sheets of paper sticking out from under the stack, and a generic open book in the lower left corner of the frame. To the right of the stack, there is a small cylindrical container which might be a pencil case.
Panel 4
Elaine frowns and texts on her sideways flip phone with “tip tip tip tip tip tip tip” sound effects: “Sis, where are you? Waited forever. Library’s closing. Hurry.”, and hits Send.

- Emily Gale is an adult woman with pale-ish skin and long thick flowing dark hair. She is wearing a blue, unbuttoned trenchcoat over a white dress, black heeled boots, and a large belt with blue gemstones embedded in it.
- The lion is very large, with a medium-dark long thick flowing mane and medium-light fur. He has large paws with small claws, as well as semi-sharp looking teeth.
Transcript
Panel 1
Emily looks out over the desert with her back to the camera. She is standing on a small grassy knoll, and her hair and coat are being blown to the right by the wind. She thinks: “I made it back to the deadly desert that protects Oz. God. Why return? My niece isn’t even resting there.”
Panel 2
The camera is pointed up into Emily’s face in a closeup shot. She hesitates, looking scared as she raises a hand to lightly hold the collar of her coat.
Panel 3
Emily begins to step toward the desert, looking intently at it with one hand held out. She thinks: “A deadly desert.”
Panel 4
A closeup shot of Emily’s feet as she stands at the edge of the sands. She thinks: “There are worse ways …”
Panel 5
As Emily takes a step toward the sand, her boot raised in midair, she thinks: “…to go after all …”
Panel 6
Two large paws suddenly appear, one in front of Emily’s face and the other behind her head. She looks completely caught off-guard.
Panel 7
The lion shouts: “STOP! Don’t do it!” as it tackles Emily to the ground with one paw on her waist. The lion’s eyes are squeezed shut, and its ears are folded back.
My Opinions
I discovered Namesake through a tumblr post, I think. Since I found the series over a decade after it was initially posted to the site, I could read a few dozen pages in one sitting and get immersed in the story. I love the characters, although the plot is complex enough that it can be difficult to remember all the relevant details. The worldbuilding is awesome, and the whole series gives me ideas for my own stories.

XKCD
A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language.
Randall Munroe is a physicist who makes comics for fun and to illustrate how physics works – he’s got a couple books (What If? and What If? 2) where he answers a range of silly to serious questions from his website. He’s got over 3000 comics on his website. Like theMeatly, there’s not usually a continuous storyline, but they’re always funny or interesting. He’s got a bunch of programming and/or computer comics posted, which I very much enjoy.

Hovertext

My Opinions
I love the simple art style – no facial features, but the characters are set apart by hairstyles and hats, or lack thereof. I also appreciate that there’s hovertext on every comic, even the oldest ones; if there’s a caption, the hovertext is different from the caption for a bit of extra content. The first couple comics are interesting; there’s some cool stuff in there, mostly sketches, but I like the more recent stuff better. His humor aligns with mine pretty well, and I love sharing the comics with my friends.
When I was in college, I had at least one assignment involving the XKCD comics; the one (and perhaps only) I remember was something to do with using an API (application programming interface) to grab the comics from the website (or the related wiki-esque site) and display them on our own page. I don’t remember which comics I picked out, but I definitely remember having fun with my favorites. I might make a separate page on this site highlighting my favorite XKCD comics; it helps that each strip is self-contained, so anyone can walk right up to it and enjoy it if it fits with their sense of humor.

theMeatly
Comics and stuff.
theMeatly is one of the developers of Bendy and the Ink Machine, and he also makes game development comics. He hasn’t posted any new ones for months, if not years, but I always enjoy reading back through them from time to time. There’s not a continuous storyline, but they’re bits and pieces I find funny and/or painfully relatable. The first couple comics are pretty random, but then they start being about playing video games and then making video games, so I like them better as time goes on.
First Comic
The first comic looks like this:

Character Descriptions
- Both characters have generic features, with circular faces and rectangular bodies. Their eyes are black dots, and their mouths stretch in a thin line all the way across their faces. They have thin straight legs with no visible feet, and no hair. They hold their arms at their sides, with their hands folded back at right-angles so that they’re parallel to the ground. There’s some slight shading on their bodies and heads, which helps to distinguish them from the background.
- The character on the left is tall and has red fur from the waist down, as well as a long furry tail.
- The character on the right is short.
Transcript
The two characters stand facing slightly toward each other somewhere outside during a full moon. The character on the left says, “Turns out I’m half werewolf on my mom’s side.” The character on the right says, “Bummer.” In the bottom right corner, there’s a banner which says “themeatly.com”.

The camera zooms in on the character’s head and arm with a red background. The character is drooling with sparkling, crazed eyes and pointing a finger upward as they say, “…but I have a better one!!” At the bottom, there’s a banner which says “themeatly.com”.
My Opinions
Since there’s no continuous storyline, I don’t have a favorite named character, but I’m guessing the “main character” is based on theMeatly’s personal experiences. I’m a game developer too, on more of a hobby level, and so I appreciate all these comics. In some of them, there are characters like Chaos, who lurks menacingly nearby with a battleaxe, or the Complicator, who suggests creating an entirely new game engine to fix a stubborn bug. His sense of humor doesn’t always line up with mine, but I like his comics a lot anyway.

Broccoli Soup!
This is a story about a young Broccoli who lives in a void with their best friend Doris. Everything is ideal. There is definitely nothing wrong here.
Broccoli is so cute, and the premise and plot are intriguing – I have a lot of questions about the characters, and I very much look forward to seeing how they get answered. Who is Broccoli really? Who is Doris really? Where do they come from? Where does Waffles the cat from from? There’s been hints to some of these bigger questions, but the answers are still fuzzy for now.
First Comic
A panel from the first comic looks like this:

Character Descriptions
- Broccoli is a young girl, perhaps around six years old, with pale skin and shoulder-length bouncy light hair. She is wearing a long-sleeved simple dress, rainboots, and has a tiny bow in her hair.
- Lady Doris is tall and has long loose straight light hair. She is wearing a long-sleeved simple dress, rainboots, and has a small bow in her hair.
Transcript
On the right, outside of any panel, Lady Doris is floating a few inches above the ground with her back to the camera.

- Waffles is a human-sized black cat. He is wearing a dark blue suit and black tie, with a white undershirt. He has green eyes and green eyebrows in the close up, and white eyes without pupils in the bird’s-eye view.
- The shark henchman is wearing a medium-dark t-shirt. He has a fin poking out of the back of his head and seems to have human-like hands.
- The goblin-ish henchman is wearing some sort of long-sleeved light shirt. His head is bowl shaped, with a second, smaller bowl shape on top of his head, and pointy ears.
Transcript
Closeup
Waffles is laughing maniacally. In the opening of his mouth, there is a reflection in which the two henchmen are visible gripping each other in fear.
Bird’s-eye View
Waffles is sitting at a desk in the upper left corner of the room, and his laugh subsides into a chuckle. Behind him, there are a few framed paintings and posters hanging on the gray wall. In the middle of the floor, there is a large jagged hole with a few planks laid across it. In the lower left corner, there is a potted coral plant. The two henchmen are on the right-hand side of the room, in front of a large double door.
My Opinions
Broccoli Soup! is a wonderful story. The updates are rather infrequent due to the other being very busy with things such as grad school, which makes it all the more delightful when a new episode is available. I love the atmosphere and plot so far, and I’m quite invested in seeing what happens next. It’s a chill story with a whole bunch of mystery. I want to believe that Waffles isn’t actually as evil as he pretends to be, but then he does some violent things and I start to believe him a little more.
